Something you have set to start in Windows is failing. It could be malware
or it could be a legitimate program, process, or driver.

Your first step is to make sure the computer is virus/malware-free:

If the computer is clean and the problem still arises, manage your Startup:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista -
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;929135

Start OrbSearch boxtype: msconfig and when it appears in the Results box
above, right-click and choose "Run as Administrator".

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,
type the password, or click Continue. Then see what is on the Startup tab.
You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll get
a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Usually in Vista this will be
blocked by Windows Defender and you'll need to allow it so you can then
tick the box that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Services.

Start OrbSearch boxtype: services and when it appears in the Results box
above, right-click and choose "Run As Administrator". Confirm elevation as
needed.

The free Autoruns program is very useful for managing your Startup -

Default Boot Up Error

Thanks for the information. I will try this. This message is actually not
happening on my computer, a friend of mine that basically uses the computer
for email and the web is the one getting this message. It's a Compaq
computer that was bought with Vista pre-installed. I downloaded all the
updates when I set the pc up, but there seems to be a lot of issues with
this pc. So I appreciate the assistance and hopefully I can get her fixed
up with this solution, otherwise I think the next step is she will be
throwing it out a window!!
