User account name wrong displayed
Hi I want to create a new user account and something isn't working very well. Via configurationscreen -- user account I try to create one and that part works normal, but when I go to Explorer I don't see the folder with that new username on it. I've tried it as administrator, and with a different account but with no success. Does anyone have a solution for it? Best regards Carlo (Vista Home Premium 64bit sp1) -- witten1972 |

Hi,
The folders are not created until someone logs into the account. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org My thoughts http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com "witten1972" wrote in message ... The user profile folder for a new account will not be created until you've actually logged in using that account. Best regards Carlo (Vista Home Premium 64bit sp1) Hello Carlo, After you have created the new user account for the first time, you will need to log on to that new account first for Vista to create the C:\Users\(user name) folder and setup that account's desktop. User account name wrong displayed
Hi Shawn Thanks for your help and your feedback. The information that you provided cured my problem. I have another question in the same area. My standard user account is wrongly displayed. In Explorer it shows C:\Users\User instead of C:\Users\my name. I tried to change it via the configurationscreen but the changes won't take effect after altering. I can type my desired name for that account, but afterwards it doesn't appear so in Explorer. And this is my account where I'm usually log in with, so your previous described method won't help in this case. Do you have any other suggestions? Best regards Carlo -- witten1972 |

Carlo, The C:\Users\(User Name) folder cannot be renamed. You can rename the account, but it will not change the user folder name, then both user names are associated with that account. The only way to rename the C:\Users\(user name) folder is to create a new account with a name that has not been used with the other one, then '*delete the old user account*' (http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/93...t-delete.html). Best regards Carlo The user profile folders (C:\Users\Username) _cannot_ be renamed, without risky registry editing, even if the associated user account has been renamed, which isd what I surmise you did. So, if you don't really want to restore the machine to its original, ex-factory state, your best course of action would be to log on using the built-in Administrator account, create a new user account, with the username desired. Once you've logged in using this new account (and transfered any data you need to preserve, you can then delete the old user account(s). -- Bruce Chambers Help us help you: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/555375 They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. ~Benjamin Franklin Many people would rather die than think; in fact, most do. ~Bertrand Russell The philosopher has never killed any priests, whereas the priest has killed a great many philosophers. ~ Denis Diderot |

User account name wrong displayed
Hi Shawn Before I do anything I want to know a few things. 1) is it possible after deleting this account and SAVING the content of that usernames folder to the desktop, to copy everything into a new account with the correct username and keep every setting? (desktop settings, folder settings...) I spend many hours in adjusting everything to my needs and preferences, and I just want those settings to be taken over in that other account without any loss. 2) before doing any damage, is it possible to copy content of the account I want to delete to another account without deleting the account. And than when everything seems ok than delete the account I want to be deleted. I'll wait for your answer before commencing, regards Carlo -- witten1972 |

Carlo, You can copy all of the contents of the old C:\Users\(user name) folders into the new accounts corresponding folders to retain most settings, but you will not be able to retain all of them though. Yes, I would wait until after you have everything copied over to the new account and have verified all is ok before deleting the old user account. -- Brink *There are no dumb questions, just the people that do not ask them.* '*Windows 7 Forums*' (http://www.sevenforums.com/) *and* '*::Vista Forums::*' (http://www.vistax64.com) *Please post feedback to help others.* |
