I need help identifying processes running and how to shut them down so that I can free up memory...I have anywhere from 80 to +90 processes running. I have 2gb memory and 80%-90% is always being used? I have like 12-16 svchost running and have no idea what they are. I scan my entire cpu every night with AVG and win def...It says I have a clean computer. -- Viracocha711 |

I scan my entire cpu every night with AVG and win def...It says I have a clean computer. I would also scan with Malwarebytes Antimalware (MBAM). Get the free version from www.malwarebytes.org. Then if the machine is clean, do clean-boot troubleshooting to determine what is running. To identify things you see, Google the process name. How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista - http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;929135 Using the System Configuration Utility: Start OrbSearch boxtype: msconfig and when it appears in the Results box above, right-click and choose "Run as Administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue. Then see what is on the Startup tab. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Usually in Vista this will be blocked by Windows Defender and you'll need to allow it so you can then tick the box that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again". Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes. Instead, use Services. Start OrbSearch boxtype: services and when it appears in the Results box above, right-click and choose "Run As Administrator". Confirm elevation as needed. The free Autoruns program is very useful for managing your Startup - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys...s/default.mspx - Autoruns Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic! Is there a good free (I will pay if it is worth it) program that a novice could use to safely identify and control what processes are running? I know there has to be way to many running on my machine that do not need to be. 85-95 processes at any given time? I downloaded auto-runs however, I am not confident I know which programs to remove from the start-up. I know I sound ignorant, and I am, but I do want to learn...Anyway, any tips for using AutoRuns would be greatly appreciated! -- Viracocha711 |

No, the way to identify programs/processes as I already told you is to Google the names. I downloaded auto-runs however, I am not confident I know which programs to remove from the start-up. I know I sound ignorant, and I am, but I do want to learn...Anyway, any tips for using AutoRuns would be greatly appreciated! If you're uncomfortable using AutoRuns, perhaps a better course of action would be for you to have a competent local computer professional take a look at the machine. S/he will quickly know whether your computer is infected, can optimize it, and show you how to maintain your machine for not a great deal of money. I'm not trying to push you out of the newsgroups, mind you. It's just that I don't know how comfortable you would be with doing anything else. I'll give you a few more links that might work for you. http://aumha.org/a/loads.htm - What loads at Startup? http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm http://www.blackviper.com http://www.liutilities.com/products/...rocesslibrary/ Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic! You MAY have to Google each service to find out what it is. Much of what you see is probably something proprietary to your computer.
