Well, I've had this laptop for over a year now. It's an Acer Aspire 5100, and I've always had problems with lag, graphical lag and system lag. I would play a game, and it would run fine for a while, but will lag after about 5 or so seconds down to three FPS. Not only did this happen in game, but now it pretty much happens when I'm just online, doing anything. I can hear the music skipping right now in the background, to be frank. I've been searching thoroughly (well as thoroughly as I could) and found out that svchost.exe might be the culprit. That seemed too out of whack for my computer, so I did a little more research and found out about the page file or swap file, so I manually changed my computer so that it would clear all of the page file once I shutdown (I had heard it added extra shut-down time, but that doesn't really matter to me.) This, unfortunately did not work. It still lags, but never hangs, constantly spinning into worse and worse lags. I decided to do a dxdiag and post it here to see if any of you could figure out what was going on. Anyways, continuing on, I recently just installed a massive load of Windows Updates, and I am almost severely sure that this is one, if not *the* cause of the problem. It did in fact create a restore point on my computer, but before I even try that, I wanted to get an opinion on here. Here are some pictures and the copied text file from the dxdiag: This is what my CPU is constantly going through: http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l.../CPU_usage.jpg (http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...89/failure.jpg) [image: http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...t_culprit.jpg] This is the svchost.exe, once I right click and click "services" I get... Now I'm not really sure what to do at this point, because I have no way of knowing which of the services are making my CPU go haywire (if any of them are). Consult the manufacturer's website and see if you can find how much RAM that laptop will support. 1GB is the bare minimum for Vista, 2GB would be preferable. -- Jane, not plain 64 bit enabled :-)Batteries not included. You have two problems. As Jane C said you need more RAM. You also have very
little free space on drive C:. I used to have the same laptop. It ran Vista very well but I did have to add some RAM and do some tweaking. Upgrade the RAM to 2 GB. Even if you have two 512MB DIMMs and have to replace them both with 1GB DIMMs the boost in performance will be well worth it. Adjust the partition sizes to give more room to the C: partition. FWIW that model was designed when XP was still current. It will run Vista but I found it best to wipe out the Acer installation and do a clean install with only one partition. You would need a Vista DVD to do this. The drivers are available on the Acer site. Once I did this and added the extra RAM Vista ran great. -- Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience: Systems Administration http://www.vistahelp.ca/phpBB2/ "inhibitorhost" wrote in message ...
