Hi, The Hard Drive LED light on my Sony Vaio keeps blinking EVERY SECOND. When it's really quiet I can hear it too, it's constantly writing. Constantly. I did my research - read all the threads on the net and so far I have disabled: Windows index Windows defender Windows search Superfetch System Restore Readyboost Defragmenter I have uninstalled google desktop. The system is totally virus and spyware free, and the anti-virus is not scanning (schedule scan disabled). All Vista updates are installed. Nothing has helped. I've run out of things to disable. What now??? Please help!!! I'm running Vista Business SP1, Dual Core 2.2 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM. -- nimic1234 Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

No, no screensaver... ![]() Rick Rogers;1164950 Wrote: Why do you want to disable everything that is designed to make your system operate more efficiently? How is CONSTANT hard drive access/writing efficient? I'm on the road a lot and I need battery time. It's driving me crazy that my HD is spinning non-stop even when I'm only typing in notepad for two hours. -- nimic1234 Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

I hope you're remembering to stop and save now and then. It won't do it for you. |

A hd constantly 'working' can also be a sign of a failing disk.
Asertain the make of hd, visit that manufacturers web site & create/use their bootable disk checking utility. If you dont know the make, try seagate seatools "nimic1234" wrote in message ... Very constructive answer, Mike, thank you so much. -- nimic1234 Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

I have used a disk doctor utility and it tells me the disk is running fine. -- nimic1234 Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

Rick Rogers;1165424 Wrote: Sounds like something is monitoring for activity during hibernation. What do you mean by that? Why would a keyboard or mouse "monitor during hibernation"? I'm not sure I understand. Anyway, not wireless mouse or keyboard, only the native stuff the laptop came with. And the HD trashing is happening when the laptop is idle AND when I'm working on it - it never stops. many of the functions you've disabled in the name of expediency are the ones designed to help your system I understood you but I'm trying to figure out how to stop my HD from working 24/7 right now :-) I deactivated all these because it is suggested in many threads about this problem. I'll probably reactivate many (Defender, Superfetch etc) once I have this figured out. -- nimic1234 Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

The behaviour you describe is perfectly normal. The brief intermittent disk accesses will have negligible impact on battery discharge. I've seen this behaviour in every PC I've used, since Win95. If you want to save battery power, make sure the WiFi hardware is turned off while you're not using it. Most laptops have a physical switch to do this. Also, turning down the screen brightness will help. |

My previous (Toshiba) laptop under XP was certainly not doing it. Furthermore, on my current laptop, running on battery and IN POWER SAVER MODE, well get this, it gets WORSE: the HD LED light stops blinking and it stays ON ALL THE TIME. ![]() ![]() I've actuallyjust realised this thanks to your post. Could it be then that the power options are somehow at fault here? -- nimic1234 Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |
