Hello, I have got real difficulty connecting to a wirless internet. The wired thing is that the network that I am trying to connect to was connecting me before, but unfortunatly (as I am in halls of residance, and did not have a anti virus running on my computer at the time) could not get through security. After much hair pulling the IT guys here pushed me through. I thought that they had somehow blocked me from the router becuase as soon as they said they fixed the problem for me I no longer could connect to the network! I am able to connect via ethanet now, and the IT support guys are completly baffeled, they have done everything their end to try and get me up and running via wireless, they even took me off the net work and added me on again to clear all settings that may have been changed! I can see the network and it has full signal, but when I connect it says failed. I run the problem thing and it comes up with this message. 'Wireless association failed becuase Windows did not recieve and response from the wireless router or access point'. After typeing this into google and being transfered to this site I see that other people have had similar problems. I keep telling the IT guys that it cant be my comp as it is only a week old!! But could it really be a problem with vista? The IT guys have gone through settings and things with me etc and still not worked, so is there something that I need to do to make this work? As i said its only a week old and so far not been able to use the internet via wireless!!!! Incase this is needed. I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW21E, with intel centrino 2, im not really sure what virson of vista I am running but when I search vista under start menu it comes up with vistax64? I will be so so greatful for anyone who could help and also recomened a way of fixing this without messing my comp....? Please help, thank you -- Sunbeam |

Hi
Hi The are variety of security measures and each one works somewhat differently than the other. It is impossible to answer your question since we do not know what type of security the Wireless logon employs at the site in question. There are millions of computers running Vista and using successfully Wireless connections, so just blaming Vista and send you away does not cut the mustard. If the IT guy is Not familiar with Vista he should investigate through his professional channels since it is his system's security, and it is Not out place to manipulate it Sorry. There is no mystery to wireless and as long as you are absolutely sure the
AP in on the Ethernet, your problem can be only one of two things and you have already eliminated one of them. If you can see the signal the ONLY other possibility is the security. You need the SSID and the security/encryption info correctly entered. THAT's IT. If you don't believe me, have the tech people set the AP to WEP and "open". Of course make the same changes on your PC. (just for a few minutes for a test). If you get connectivity, (and if you're seeing the signal, you WILL), it proves it's the security settings entered on your PC. "Sunbeam" wrote in message ... Well they have gone through all my WEP and IP settings with me over the phone and even when I took it in to see them. Also to the first reply I dont think it is the security becuase as I said I'm through that and if it was windows would come up asking for the SSID but it doesnt it just comes up with that message. Im definatly through the security or I wouldnt be able to connect via ethanet. thank you -- Sunbeam |

Hi
Ethernet security is Not the same as Wireless security it is on top of it. Your comment about Ethernet security indicated to me that you are logging to Business well protected Network and that your trouble stem from incorrect configuration of the Wireless. In any case may be as first step take your computer to a location that have regular Home type Wireless and make sure that your Wireless works. This page was written for Win XP the location of the described menus is different in Vista but the principle of what to look for is the same http://www.ezlan.net/wireless/html Jack (MS, MVP-Networking) "Sunbeam" wrote in message ...
