USB Device Not Recognized...
thanks for the tip. I was hoping that my Vista would still work with his but I guess not then. I made him buy another printer (this will be the third printer) to see if by some chance that gets things going. Could it be a hardware issue with the intel chipset and certain USB chips?? here's a quick run down: Bought his laptop with a Dell printer... that printer ran fine until it stopped pulling paper correctly so he bought an Epison printer... that started the whole "Device Not Recognized"... he then took that back and got a Canon... I've been fighting with that one now. I just had him pickup an HP printer and am about to try that... I'll report back if that works. BTW, all the USB ports have been tried with mice, memory sticks, etc and work just fine... it seems to just be printers for some reason. -- teknomedic |

SIW2;980465 Wrote: Sorry, you will have 64 bit drivers as your spec says you are using 64bit o/s. SIW2 That's was I was thinking... oh well. I don't know of anyone else that has 32bit Vista though. All the Vista machines I know of around me are running 64bit. If I simply delete the "unknown.inf_dd42ec02"... would that at least allow me to install the correct drivers without Vista defaulting... or would that cause some errors or issues? -- teknomedic |

USB Device Not Recognized...
At this point I'm coming down to thinking a couple of things... 1) it's simply a hardware issue such as chipset vs usb chip issue... or his USB cable in some way (although why woud it work with my computer then if it was the cable) 2) The pre-installed drivers from Dell for his laptop are messing this up in some way... my next step is a non-system restore... but a fresh barebones install of Vista and then download the latest drivers from the Dell website. -- teknomedic |

.... OMG .... it's his USB cable (even though it works on my laptop just fine) I was just able to track down another USB cable (because the HP printer did the same thing). I tried the old one... USB Not Recognized... I then simply tried the new cable I found it worked like a charm. wow.... how annoying. I'll cross my fingers that this doesn't "break" again while I install the rest of his PC. -- teknomedic |

USB Device Not Recognized...
teknomedic;979820 Wrote: as the title says... I'm troubleshooting a friends computer and can't seem to get it working. Basically, he's running vista home prem 32bit. He just bought a new canon mp480 inkjet printer and everytime he plugs it into his laptop he gets the "usb device not recognized". I tested his printer and cable on my laptop (vista ultimate 64bit) and it ids the printer and tries to install just fine. We're both running sp1 and i just did a double check and i we're both fully up-to-date on windows update. I've tried uninstalling the usb hardware and then doing new install of the intel chipset drivers. I've tried "forcing" the driver install using "driver update", but vista just comes back and says "driver for "unknown device" currently has the best driver. I've tried draining the laptops power and i've tried a "driver inf cache" delete thing as well... Still no good. Any thoughts?? teknomedic;979931 Wrote: tried deleting the usb devices and reinstalling them prior to doing the factory restore and that failed. I'm doing another restore right now... I'll try to install the drivers and then restart and then plug in the printer in the next go around. I did try the latest drivers available for the chipset but that didn't help... Also the bios on the laptop is the latest version so that's a no go. What i'd really like to do is remove the "general driver" vista keeps loading (ie, go into the folder and delete the inf or whatever vista is using) just so i can try a forced install of the "correct" driver.... Or if i could simply do a force install over the "better driver" vista is using... That might help. siw2;980456 Wrote: hi, the built -in drivers are in c:\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository folder if you had the same bit version of vista as your friend, you could have copied your filerepository folder to his/her driverstore folder. Know anyone with 32 bit vista that printer works on ? Hope it helps siw2 teknomedic;980475 Wrote: .... Omg .... Me too.... still annoyed that's what it was though... I guess there's a moral to the story, but I'm too annoyed to say it, lol. -- teknomedic |

USB Device Not Recognized...
kword88;980507 Wrote: could you post the specs of the laptop? maybe a screen capture of device manager? I guess I'm not sure why you need that info now since the problem was figured out... the laptop was a "Dell Studio 1535"... as for device mananger, when it wasn't recognized device manager was only reporting it as "unknown device" under the USB section. I no longer have the laptop since my friend took it home now that it's working with a new USB cable so I can't provide any screen shots. -- teknomedic |
