Default CD/DVD-ROM is gone!

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

thats all i could find out about this missing rom.
Im not sure how long its been gone since i havent used my cd's for about 2
months but when i went to insert a cd it did not start and when i went on my
computer nothing shows up but my local disk and my other drives.

I tried to update this device but it has the best one suited for me it says
I have vista home premium and my computer is a gateway GT5404

Please help

P. S. my administrative tools is empty?

Or the DVD/CD hardware may be malfunctioning.
I'd see if (with the BIOS settings set appropriately) the P/C will at least
try to boot a bootable DVD/CD
Since this is generally independent of any windows drivers, etc. a
successful boot from the drive says the drive is or is not the likely
problem.

You should look in your documentation to find out how to enter BIOS, and
change any needed settings to boot from a DVD/CD drive.

There are various software and BIOS updates available for this model on the
Gateway web site.
(You do have a bootable CD/DVD, don't you?)

I had a user that read that and went into regedit, searched for
upperfilters/lowerfilters and deleted ALL entries.
A system restore fixed it, but ONLY delete the entries in the module
specified!!!
