I have Hughesnet (satellite) broadband and so use their modem/router.
I also have a Linksys WRT54G connected as an AP to give me wireless access for a laptop, but have 3 desktops hard wired. I originally had them connected to the wired ports of the WRT54G, but have since got a 1 Gb switch, and so have them connected to that and the WRT54G also connected to the switch, and then the switch to the modem/router. Is my local speed (wired desktop-to wired desktop) limited to the speed of the modem/router, or can I hope to get 1 Gb speed going computer -to-computer? ie, should I keep the wired computers on the switch, or is performance as good by just connecting them to the WRT54G? |

Hi
Network traffic would run at Giga "speed" between computers that have Giga Network cards and are plugged to a Giga capable switch. The switch should be plugged into the Router. The Internet would work at its regular Speed and the two level of Speed would not effect one the other. Please notice that Giga speed is not x10 times faster, as the name implies, than regular 100Mb/sec. Network. In average it would run x3 times faster, with a max of x5 times if the Network parameters are optimized.
