If you have tried installing the update manually,
it would be independent of the automatic download
and install mechanism. Hence you may be more likely
to find help in a newsgroup which specializes in the
product involved...

so in this case, your OS, which you haven't disclosed
--unless it was inadvertently revealed obscurely in the
excerpts from your log, which I am not going to take the
time to analyse for that information.

In any case, since the install is failing, a better diagnostic
would be the install log for the update in question.
FWIW in my case (XPsp3) I would look for it he

%windir%\KB955839.log

Hmm... Ok. mention of CBS and the last line of your
WU log shows you have some version of Vista.
So I can try cross-posting this to a Vista NG for you.

As for your error code I'm not sure what to make of this:

The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid.

Hopefully the install log will be more revealing.
If that is not sufficient, since you are doing the install
manually, you might find that there is a verbose logging
option available for it, or you could supplement whatever
diagnostics you are getting (and help discover them all)
by running ProcMon the next time you try the install.
