USB Media Reader "Unknown Device"
Hi, Have a 6 in 1 USB 2.0 Internal Media Card Reader on an old eMachine (D2266) that ran and worked on Win XP Pro x32. There is no Manufacturer's ID Tag anywhere on this unit. I installed this card reader into my Vista Home Premium x64 machine. Then plugged into an available motherboard USB port and turned on computer. The power light on the media reader lit indicating power, and Vista claimed "device successfully installed". Inserted a SD media card and device is not working. A check of device manager reveals an 'Unknown Device" on the roothub a check on the 'Drivers Tab' reveals "There are no installed drivers for this device" or something to that effect. What I have tried: Uninstalling 'Unknown Device" & rebooting with same results. Any ideas on this one? They are usually called something like "Ricoh". Because you are running Vista 64, you would need 64-bit signed drivers. I really doubt that Gateway will have them but you could search for 64-bit drivers for your device on their site from more current Gateway models. Or get yourself a new card reader that comes with Vista 64-bit drivers. Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic! http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/#FAQ |

USB Media Reader "Unknown Device"
Hi Malke, Thanks for the quick reply and info. The computer with Vista on it is not a Gateway or an eMachine; but a complete custom home build by myself. I was hoping that Vista Home Premium SP1 x64 would have come with some type of a generic Multimedia Card Reader driver in it. As long as it's a USB 2.0 compliant device (it is) it should work. I just can't believe Billy Boy's crew missed the x64 drivers for a generic 2.0 card reader. Then again, why am I not surprised. Thanks for the help, it's greatly appreciated. Jakeman97 I understood that the new machine isn't a Gateway but the hardware came out of your Gateway. While Vista does come with a ton of drivers, the 64-bit version is more restricted. On all the OEM machines I work on that have built-in card readers, drivers are required. As I mentioned, I usually find them on the OEM's site listed as Ricoh drivers. You might try some drivers that I found using this Google search: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...earch&aq=f&oq= Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic! http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/#FAQ |

USB Media Reader "Unknown Device"
Hi again and thank you so much. I will take a look at these Ricoh 64 drivers you provided. I'm actually thinking at this time of purchasing a new Card Reader and am looking at a SiiG model JU-MR0012-S1 System Requirements: Windows 2000 SP4 / XP (32- / 64-bit) / Server 2003 (32- / 64-bit) / Vista (32- / 64-bit) Pentium or equivalent PC with an available 3.5” device bay An available internal USB port (USB 2.0 recommended). I believe this should work for me and it won't break the bank. I was just trying to get by with what I had. Oh well, another piece of hardware for the scrap pile. Thanks again, Jakeman97 -- Jakeman97 asus m3a78-t am2+/am2 amd 790gx hdmi amd phenom 9950 2.6ghz socket am2+125w quad-core ultra x3 1000-watt psu g.skill 4gb ddr2 800 |

USB Media Reader "Unknown Device"
I was unable to get Vista HP SP1 x64 to install a driver for my internal USB Media Card Reader that I took from my old XP machine PROBLEM SOLVED: Perhaps this was an unconventional way to do it but this is what I did. Vista x64 Computer: opened C:\\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository Chose the most recent usbstor.inf file Xcopy opened C:\\Windows\Inf pasted the usbstor.inf file into this folder (On my system there was no usb.stor.inf file in this folder). Shutdown and disconnected Power Cord...Plugged in my USB Media Card Reader to a motherboard USB connection....Booted up and day of Joy "Windows has successfully updated your driver software" Windows Vista is calling my device a 'Storage Device'....I don't really care, it works, and I don't have to purchase more hardware. I was unable to find any reference to a Multimedia Card Reader in any of the Vista Files. Oh yes the drive MS installed is Microsoft 6/21/2006 6.0.6001.18000 Thanks again for you help Malke Jakeman97 -- Jakeman97 asus m3a78-t am2+/am2 amd 790gx hdmi amd phenom 9950 2.6ghz socket am2+125w quad-core ultra x3 1000-watt psu g.skill 4gb ddr2 800 |

USB Media Reader "Unknown Device"
Hi all, The 'fix' I described in my last post did work. However each time the computer was booted up in the morning Vista would find an 'unknown device' and install the only driver it could find the 'usbstor' driver. This was a PIA so I continued to search and found this site [clicky] 'Y-E DATA | Support | Internal 6 in 1 Drive Driver Download' (http://www.yedata.com/support/internal_6_in_1.shtml) with exactly the driver I had been searching for the 'usbstvs100' driver. My 6 in 1 device is now called a 'Media Reader' in the System Device Manager. This driver is compatible with all the Windows Venues including Vista x64.
