VISTA x64 compatable NAS?
 

Does anybody know of a Vista x64 compatible NAS that is also backward
compatible with Vista x32 and XP? My Netgear SC101 NAS is not
compatible and I need a NAS to work with all three OS flavors.

What problems are you having with it? The remote interface? Most NAS's
should work with any OS, as they use standard TCP/IP as a shared drive.

The Netgear SC101 will work with 32bit Vista, as well as XP, but does
not work with 64bit Vista. I tried to install the driver and it would
not install. I checked on the Netgear support site and found that the
product will not support 64bit Vista and they are not going to write a
driver. I started checking around and most NAS drives will not support
64bit Vista. A few will, but are extremly expensive (one I found cost
in the thousands). So, does anybody know of a NAS setup that will work
at a reasonable cost with Vista 64bit? I guess one option I could do is
recycle an old pc and set the drive as shared on the network.

If you go the old PC route, you can look into the Windows Home Server
platform. It is extremely simple, supports x64, does a LOT, has excellent
backup capabilities, and isn't that expensive. And the hardware requirements
aren't that high, either.

I'm trying to find the same answer. I have a WD My Book World Edition II 1TB
drive. It worked just fine until I added a Vista Home Premium x64 box to the
mix. Then the WD started loosing contact with the network every 2-3 hours,
requiring it to be power cycled. The WD support response was that they've
never tested it with any x64 OS. One addendum, I put it back on the network
last Friday and it has stayed connected for about 52 hours now. One
difference is that I'm not doing anything on the WD. It's just connected.

I'm currently using Ximeta NDAS on a home network with (2) Vista
Ultimate x64 boxes, along with a string of XP Pro (32bit)
laptops/desktops....7 total.

You can purchase multiple NDAS enclosures (each holds 1 drive) and use
the BIND software to make Raid0 or Raid1 arrays.

Performance kicks butt and it's an easy setup. However...it's not
robust like using quotas, user rights, no Raid5 but it also isn't IP
accessible which means no hackers. They would have to get through your
PC firewall to access the NDAS device.

Anyway for a working cheap Vista x64 solution, this works.
