Default Windows Vista Backup is failing

Because my Vista Business has become unreliable due to other family
members installing all kinds of stuff, I want to go back to the new
install image I took only 3 months ago using Vista complete pc backup &
restore on two DVDs.

I boot the machine using the the Vista ROM disk and (eventually) the
repair menu appears. I then put in the backup disk, hit find backup and
a search progress bar appears. Then it tells me it can't find any back
up disks. I have tried several times with slight variations but the same
result.

Am I to conclude that Backup and restore is a useless sham that can't
be relied on or has anyone got any ideas.

Any help much appreciated.
