Default slow, practically frozen

i have 32bit home premium
i boot the laptop, click on my user account and the desktop and stuff
loads up
10 seconds later, everything is incredibly slow, I click on the Start
button and it takes 2 minutes to open, that's one of the 'better' boots,
sometimes the desktop loads and is already frozen (i can't even move the
mouse)

i tried removing some startup programs via windows defender, but
nothing is helping

if anyone can help, im not exactly tech savvy

im running in safe mode w/ networking at the moment

i have 3gig ram, c2d t5750 2ghz

I'll give you some suggestions but because you say you're not "tech savvy" a
better course of action might be to take the machine to a competent local
computer tech. This won't be a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place.

1. The first step is always to make sure the computer is virus/malware-free:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware

2. If the computer is 100% clean and the problem still exists, manage your
Startup.

Start OrbSearch boxtype: msconfig and when it appears in the Results box
above, right-click and choose "Run as Administrator".

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,
type the password, or click Continue. Then see what is on the Startup tab.
You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll get
a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Usually in Vista this will be
blocked by Windows Defender and you'll need to allow it so you can then
tick the box that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Services.

Start OrbSearch boxtype: services and when it appears in the Results box
above, right-click and choose "Run As Administrator". Confirm elevation as
needed.

The free Autoruns program is very useful for managing your Startup -

3. Make sure you have enough room on your hard drive, although if you didn't
(or this is a physical problem with the drive) I'd expect the slowness in
Safe Mode too and you say the machine behaves normally in Safe Mode.
