Hey folks, Having a massive problem here with vista! Windows explorer decided not to respond and then said that it required restart, while in the process of restart explorer the laptop crashed with blue stop error screen. Afterwards, new startup screen came on saying the vista is unable to load and to chose either Startup repair or Resume Windows normally now when I tried to use startup repair it was unable to fix problem and then tried to resume normally but this showed only a blank black screen. What is happening and how can I fix this?! Your help is much appreiciated. Im trying to do this without formatting if possible since there are still important documents and programs that I need to backup! Thanks -- omaraza |

When you boot from the Vista DVD there is the option to use System Restore. Since Startup Repair didn't work you may want to try that next (restore to a date/time as close as possible to before things went wrong). |

Hey, tried to use vista dvd but that doesnt not even load. System restore is unresponsive and now i am getting blue stop error screen when trying to run normally. At this point i think if there is even a way to get to safe mode that would be helpful -- omaraza |

Thanks Have you tried booting into the advanced recovery Enviroment (RE) on the Vista O/S disk? you have corruption (possible due to reg cleaners/optimizers, malware, or user error), you need to repair,and/or rebuild the BCD (boot data), or re-install Windows. If you have a recovery partition (and not a Vista disk) Tutorial to create a recovery disk: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/14...very-disc.html To perform a startup repair (*SOMETIMES THIS MUST BE DONE TWICE*): http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/19...y-options.html *To rebuild the BCD using the command prompt (will require booting into system recovery):* To repair/rebuild the Boot Config Data Use the Bootrec.exe Tool To run the Bootrec.exe tool, you must start Windows RE. To do this, follow these steps: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/16...-software.html 'How to use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows *Recovery* Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows Vista' (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392) - Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer. - Press a key when you are prompted. - Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click *Next*. - Click *Repair your computer*. - Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click *Next*. - In the *System Recovery Options* dialog box, click *Command Prompt*....(see link for futher instructions) -- rive0108 '::_-Win_$500_With_Vista_Forums-_::' (http://www.vistax64.com/competitions..._more_info-_:: |

Ok, I have tried to run the advanced recovery but this does not seem to be working, it doesnt show any vista version to repair, therefore the restore does not seem to work. Startup repair is not helping just states that the problem cannot be solved which is what i hate about windows! Bootrec in dos prompt seems to be the only option that is showing any helpful signs of movement. Before I try to rebuild the Boot data there is one question. I have a partition with all the data on d: and programs and vista on c: ,when using rebuild bcd does this mean that the information on both c: and d: is erased? because I really need the information stored on my d: drive. Also it seems that in the Windows RE when trying to open c: through load drivers, an error comes up saying the c: needs to be formatted. However, when I say format response is that c: is unformattable. Unless someone can help me it seems like I might need to take the hard disk out remove my data and then restore factory settings? Or possibly try to use something like ubuntu? -- omaraza |

I meant command prompt. Does Bcd rebuild delete the data on my drives? Will try Bcd rebuild and sfc repair. Thanks for all the help. Hopefully I may be able to get somewhere. Cheers -- omaraza |

Ok I have tried Bcd rebuild, but apparently it is saying that there is no vista installation that is on my laptop?! Sfc repair was unexecutable due to windows resource protection! On top of that I cannot get my vista cd to load even after I have set the dvd to boot first. So it would be great if I could get any other suggestions? Maybe I can load a cd based os and try to recover files or a rescue kit software? Help Please!! -- omaraza |

Did you insert Vista dvd, and restart, then "hit any key to boot from disk" at prompt? -- rive0108 '::_-Win_$500_With_Vista_Forums-_::' (http://www.vistax64.com/competitions..._more_info-_:: |

There is one other thing you can do to recover the data- Partition the drive, re-install Vista on a second partition, then you can access the data on the old corrupted Vista Installation (which will be drive D), back it up to DVD's or an external HDD, then reboot into the partitioner disk (or Vista DVD), then simply DELETE all partitions, and re-install Vista into the unpartitioned space. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/16...-software.html Note- If you have SATA/SCSI/AHCI drives you will need to load the 3rd party storage controller driver for the vista Install to see the Hard drive, and Install. you can also access the BIOS and switch it from AHCI to IDE, Install Vista, but you must switch it back and install the SATA/RAID driver. -- rive0108 '::_-Win_$500_With_Vista_Forums-_::' (http://www.vistax64.com/competitions..._more_info-_:: |
