Default Reinstalling a preinstalled Vista OS (on HP laptop)

My OS (Vista Home Premium Build 6000) came preinstalled on an HP laptop. I
seem to be having a lot of problems*, and have now lost all my System
Restore points. So I'm thinking of reinstalling the OS. Apparently the
default option leaves the programs and data intact. But I'm nervous. What
risks are involved with this?

Thanks for any input.

(* Chief of these is that I can start Quattro Pro but when I try to open a
document with a macro in it, the program shuts down automatically.)

As with any PC process data backups are allways wise
You have scanned your PC for malaware and Virus, using several different
apps?

Whoops I see this is a repeat of your earlier
If Panda was the only scan you ran, that is insufficient

Following your advice, I downloaded a trial version of McAfee. It invited me
to uninstall Panda because of conflicts, something which I am very reluctant
to do. Surely there will be conflicts with any other antivirus prog too.

Besides, I have been having the same problem for many months. It is hard to
believe that it is being caused by a virus which Panda has failed to detect
over such a long period.

Do you know of an antivirus which I can run without having to uninstall
Panda?
