Using Vista Home Premium.
I have the WAV file type associated with CoolEdit 2000. But if I double-click on a WAV file, I get a window "Welcome to Windows Media Player 11 for Windows Vista". If I rightclick on the WAV file and choose "Open with", CoolEdit and WMA are among the options. CoolEdit is top of the list and I choose it, but the file opens in WMP as above. The only way to open the WAV file in CoolEdit is to open CoolEdit first. When I get that unwanted WMP window, I have to remember every time to exit quick, otherwise a mistake could allow WMP to invade my system even further. Actually that happened the first time and I had to do a system restore. There is no problem making MP3 files, for example, open in CoolEdit by default. What is going on? Ciarán Ó Duibhín. |

Hardly an invasion, along with WMC, WMP is the original default app for
those and some other media types. Try the settings in Control Panel - Default Programs. From there check the settings under the Set Default Programs link -- Remove the unwanted defaults from Media Player, enable the same ones (if you can) for Cool Edit and also set Cool Edit as the default program for the media types it can handle. Also in that same applet check under Set Associations that Cool Edit is the default program to open .WAV and other file types you want it to open. "Ciarán Ó Duibhín" wrote in message ... Thanks to all. I got this problem under Vista fixed by uninstalling and
reinstalling CoolEdit 2000, with a carefully-choreographed sequence of associating and disassociating .WAV files with CoolEdit. A key part seems to be: disassociate .WAV from CoolEdit before reinstalling, keep it disassociated while reinstalling, and associate it afterwards. For anyone similarly affected in future, I'll summarize the problem. .WAV files were associated with CoolEdit: .WAV was not ticked in WMP's defaults, and .WAV had CoolEdit in Set Associations. Despite this association, when I doubleclicked a .WAV file, it opened in WMP; when I rightclicked it and chose Play, it opened in WMP; when I rightclicked it and used Open, it opened in WMP; when I rightclicked it and chose Open with CoolEdit, it opened in WMP. Following the ideas of inc2000, I noticed that "Open with IrfanView" and "Open with foobar" both worked. And if I changed the association of .WAV files to foobar (say), doubleclick opened them in foobar. So, the problem is not with WMP but with CoolEdit; moreover it is with CoolEdit (not foobar or IrfanView), with .WAV (not .MP3 which opens fine in CoolEdit), and probably with my machine. What I did: .. I associated .WAV with foobar (to get it disassociated from CoolEdit) .. I uninstalled CoolEdit 2000. CoolEdit was now absent from .WAV's "Open with" .. I reinstalled CoolEdit 2000, with all extensions disassociated. CoolEdit somehow reappeared on .WAV's "Open with", but now, "Open with CoolEdit" works! .. Doubleclicking .WAV still uses foobar, so I associated .WAV with CoolEdit, and all is well. (Note that CoolEdit 2000, although widely used as an audio editor, has not been supported for some time.)
