Vista backup and restore is setup to automatically create a backup every Friday night at 9:00 PM to an external disk. After a month I no longer need some of the older backup files so I deleted two via windows explorer because there is no way that I've found to delete old backup files using the backup and restore center. Now when I go into the restore files (advanced) screen that list the available backup files on my external disk, I see the two backup files I deleted. The question I have is, what needs to be done so that Vista backup and restore does not list backup files that have been deleted? thanks -- dtinman12 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ dtinman12's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/97030.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-v...ce/1175943.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

Go into B&R and create a new full backup thru 'change settings'. The next
weeks B&R will append to that (incremental backup). After the full backup is completed you can delete the entire 'old' backup set. The way you did this probably made the entire backup set useless "dtinman12" wrote in message ... Thanks for the feedback. I'm new to B & R so not sure I understand your answer. The B & R does not appear to do a "full" backup unless I manually request it. So does this mean that I can never delete any of the older incremental backups within the set without manually running a new "full" backup first? After I create a new "full" backup what are the correct steps to delete the previous backup set so that it does not show up in the restore list? thanks. -- dtinman12 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ dtinman12's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/97030.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-v...ce/1175943.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

At this point I'd suggest deleting the entire "WindowsImageBackup" directory, it's very likely that what you have won't be useful in a restore. Vista's backup and restore components are essentially incremental, you can't delete old backups yourself as far as I know (although I've honestly never tried) but Vista does attempt to manage the available disk space on the backup destination and will merge changes forward. In other words, older backups should roll off naturally as disk space needs demand it. |

As far as I can tell, older backups do not roll off naturally as expected by
the poster below. What I do: I let the backups accumulate incrementally and automatically on my external hard drive which I use only for Vista file backups. When the drive is nearly full, I delete the whole lot and start over with a new complete backup. Vista's backup algorithm can be seen at this URL: http://cfsbloggers.members.winisp.ne...crementall.jpg You will see that, eventually, it will try to add a full backup on top of whatever you have anyway. That is usually the point when I delete and start over. I have mine set to auto backup once per week and can usually get about three months before I have to start over on my 160GB external drive. The length of time is also dependent on what kind of work you are doing. Last year I did a did a lot of video editing that created lots of big files and I had to restart the backup sooner than than normal. Actually, the video files were also eating up my regular hard drive, so I bought a 2nd external drive just to offload and store the video files; I use DVD's to backup the video store. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Dave Warren" wrote in message ...
