Hi everyone, I will try to be as brief as possible with this but I want
to make sure I explain all the details as I am stuck and not knowing
what to do at about 8 PM when tomorrow is a workday . Anyways...

Windows Platform: 32xVista, Comp: HP 6700 ; To start off, I was an
idiot and was installing some program a friend had given to me and it
required "New SID" from Microsoft and I did brief (obviously too brief)
research on Microsoft's site and I went to install it. It sat there for
literally an hour and I thought the process had froze but did not know
what to do so I ended up ending the task from the task manager... and
when I restarted....boom! Everything changed and disappeared...

So on my desktop everything with the appearance changed and I am
shocked to discover that I no longer have Administrator access, my
useraccount *User* has only guest privileges (and I went online and
spent hours today doing a search with people with similar problems) and
went through Safemode....went through other procedures to try to access
my account but I'm unable to! The weirdest thing is that I am able to
log on to the "Administrator" account when I am in safe mode but, and a
big but.....my Admin account in safe mode is also under Guest status and
I can't do anything to stop it!

Under "Users" folder I can view all the user accounts I see the
following: ADMINI~1, Administrator (recently created & showing),
Default, Public, Roaming, *User Account*, *UserAccount.UserAccount-PC* &
NTUser.dat; now...I had a fingerprint reader (the Microsoft one)
installed from before and the weird thing is whenever it asks me for
administrator permission access, it asks me to input my fingerprint but
when I do, now it doesn't work! In Administrator mode that I was
in....it wouldn't even have that and it would be blank and wouldn't let
me click on "ok" to give me admin. access.

I also don't have access to the *UserAccount* folder that used to be
the one I always used and had access to and while I am logging on that
same name....it appears that I am using *UserAccount.UserAccount-PC* .

Other than that, I have my current SID# but am I somehow able to change
my SID# to the previous one and is there a way I can find out what that
# was???

I have VERY Super Important files so I can't just reformat it without
losing my important data files....I don't mind losing the program files
and to reinstall each and every program (as long as I am able to get a
list of the names of the programs) if possible.....but save my data and
then reformat....but someone please help me as I don't know what else to
do. I am pretty computer savvy but I am just stuck out of options....any
help? Thanks again in advance for anyone willing to try to help me, I
want to pull my hair out! Again thanks so much, and I appreciate the
help..

Reboot!

Start tapping the F8 key toward the end of the bios info screens. You will
be taken to a black screen with many options. Choose "Last Known Good
Configuration"

See if this works.

Hi xxsassxx31--

Running this tool should restore your user account settings. It is not very
well known, and it has been developed by a Aaron Stebner, a Program Manager
who has been at the Redmond campus MSFT 11 years. It is easy to run, and
it takes about 45 minutes. If it does not work, and I believe it will, then
you can probably get back with a system restore point, which I'm surprised
you have not tried, or by running the Startup Repair tool or its bootrec
switches, and directions for that are below the links for the SubInACL tool.

http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/articles/488032.aspx

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

In the event the SubInACL tool doesn't restore permissions, try these
directions.

If you don't have a Vista DVD, then download and burn the .iso at this link
to make one:
Download Vista Repair Disk
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/window...disc-download/

1) First try 3 options from Startup Repair. If you have a Vista DVD then
restart with it in the drivepress any key to boot from it and run Startup
Repair. From Startup Repair you have 3 good tools with an excellent chance
of fixing your system. If you don't have a Vista DVD from which to boot to
Startup Repair, no problem, Download the .iso from the link below and
burn it, and you'll have the Microsoft Vista Repair Disk with Startup
Repair.

Download Vista Repair Disk
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/window...disc-download/

How to Use Startup Repair from the Vista DVD or the Repair Disk you make:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...torial142.html

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...f3f351033.mspx

2) If Startup Repair does not get your Vista back, then use the 3 bootrec
commands from the command prompt available on the Statup Repair Menu:

The menu I refer to is in this set of directions with a grey background.

http://vistahomepremium.windowsreins...airstartup.htm

Those a

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuild BCD

3) If my second option doesn't work, then try System restore from the
Startup Repair list.

4) If by rare chance you have an actual Vista DVD, you can put it in, boot
from itchoose the Upgrade Optionchoose your current broken Vista Drive and
try to do a repair install with the Vista DVD.

How To Perform a Repair Installation For Vista
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88...all-vista.html

5) If the above 3 tools don't work, then use the 4 tools available by
restarting your pc and tapping F8 once per second to get to the Windows
Advanced Options Menu.

From this menu click on 3 Safe Mode links to use System Restore. Make sure
you try all 3 if one doesn't work, because just one of them may work.
Tap F8 to Reach Windows Advanced Options Menu Pictured Below:

http://media.photobucket.com/image/v...ot-Options.jpg

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command: At the prompt you would type the command to use
forsystem restore at the safe mode cmd prompt is:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

If these 3 tools don't work, you have one more you can try which is Last
Known Good Configuration.

Good luck,

CH

Thank you so much for your reply...when installing subinacl, it asks for
system permissions . I can't do a system restore because I do not have
any unfortunately available. I can't work on this tool I assume
now...

For " Those a

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuild BCD"

do I do this in X:\Sources or do I change it to C:\?
