Default Connecting an old hard drive to a new computer

http://www.microsoft.com/communities... dware_devices

I have a new eMachine D620-5133, Model No. MS2257, which is made by Acer.
The operating system is Window Vista Home Basic SP-1 and it has a 32-bit
operating system. I am trying to connect the hard drive from my old Dell
with Windows 98 to my new computer. The old hard drive is made by Western
Digital and does not have a jumper setting. I bought an Airlink101 3.5” USB
2.0 SATA/IDE HDD Enclosure, Model AEN-U35SE to accomplish the connection.
The salesman told me not to worry about the jumper setting. Everything went
fine, but nothing shows up under “My Computer.” The instructions from
Airlink said if this happens, I should go to Control Panel / Administrative
Tools / Disk Management and right click on the unallocated disk and select
“New Partition.” The old hard drive shows up as a new unallocated disk,
which is exactly what is suppose to happen. Everything looks like the
example, except that when I right click on the unallocated disk the option of
“New Partition” does not show up, so I’m dead in the water. I’m guessing I
need to set up a “new partition.” Does anybody have any idea how to do that?
Or does anybody have any idea how to solve my problem?

Are you trying to see data on the old drive or are you wishing to format it
to use as a spare disk?

And what good is that if the disk is not visible?

Default Connecting an old hard drive to a new computer

HI, Jim.

In Disk Management, click on Help, then explore. This Help file covers all
of MMC, not just Disk Management, and it is organized as a reference, not a
tutorial, so we can't just read it like a textbook. It is loaded with good
information but we have to search for the topics we need. DM has been one
of my most-used utilities ever since it first appeared in Windows 2000, over
9 years ago. My favorite way to open it is to just press Start and type in
"diskmgmt.msc" and press Enter; this bypasses the rest of MMC and uses all
the screen real estate, after we Maximize the window. (After 9 years and
several improvements, DM still always opens up in a small window, the
columns are still too narrow, and it won't remember settings from one
session to the next.) I'm running Win7, so the text in your Vista may be
slightly different, but the basics are still the same. Also, this Help file
covers a lot more than the mundane disks that most of us deal with; we have
to "read around" all the discussions of dynamic disks, GUID partition
tables, and other topics that we may need to learn about some day don't deal
with yet.

In Help, search for "foreign", then "Move Disks to Another Computer". There
is a full page of text here telling how to "Install disks in the new
computer" and similar topics.

I am responding to my own posting. I took the enclosure back to the store,
and the fellow there knew immediately what the problem was. In order to make
the enclosure work it is first necessary to disable Norton GoBack. As soon
as I did this, everything worked fine. Thanks to all who responded.

Poor MALKELEAH widow bitch! No pretending of me anywhere. I must admit your

Hi, Malke.

Don't let "The C" get you riled. He's just jealous that he can't prove that
he's an MVP - like the rest of us "nutheads", who are proud to "go well"
with you. ;)
