Default problems with external display

I have a brand-new LG 32" 1080p LCD TV, and a Dell laptop with Windows
x64 Home Premium. My laptop has an HDMI out port, and I just got an
HDMI cable today, so I figured hey why not let's hook the computer up to
the TV. It does work, but when I set it to display only on the TV, the
image is stretched out as though it is too big for the screen. The
display settings on the laptop are set to 1920x1080, so I dont
understand why it is stretching like this. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Your video output must be set to the resolution of your TV set. It is not
the same as your built in monitor. Check your TV specs for the information -
you know, the instruction book that came with!

Your TV is probably over scanning all input over HDMI which is very common
with HDTVs so that they emulate traditional CRT TVs.
Check to see if your TV has a picture size setting of dot-to-dot or 1-to-1
to emulate this overscan.

The TV is 1080p, so the resolution -should- be 1920x1080. And I
couldn't find anything about dot-to-dot or 1-to-1 in the settings
anywhere...

If you have the 32LH40 see the instructions for the Picture wizard on page
70 of your user's manual and select Just Scan

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try reading the threads on www.avsforum.com

Search for your specific LG model number, or nearest similar model.

Not all HDMI devices interact properly. They're "supposed to" but they
often don't. Combine that with how some video chipsets do a bad job of
adjusting their output resolution and, well, you may be in for bad news.

Default problems with external display

i need some help. my brother managed to get rid of the viruses on the
comp,
as well as clearing a lot of space. it worked fine earlier, but for
some
reason, when i logged in earlier there was nothing on the desktop. the
only
way i can access anything is by ctrl + alt + del and then using new
task.
i've tried restoring it, and tried going into safe mode but i still
have the
same problem under safe mode. any help?

Have you tried right clicking on your desktop then selecting View and then
making sure that show all icons is selected?
