Default DVD maker confusion

I have a downloaded movie which I've converted to .avi. It's 748 mb.
Yet when I try to burn it to a blank 4.7gb DVD, on Windows DVD maker,
I'm told there's not enough space on the disk. Huh?

========================================
Video DVD is not about file size...it's about duration.
As a general rule...you can fit one hour of high quality
video on a 4.7 GB DVD blank. If your software has
an option for Best Fit or similar...you may be able to
burn a longer movie.

OK - Thanks, John. That explains it all very neatly.
Cheers
