Hi, andraman.
Windows Explorer and Computer (My Computer was in WinXP; most of the "My" prefixes were dropped in Vista.) are simply windows through which we can see files and folders. We can "look but don't touch" with these tools. To actually manage these devices, we need to use Disk Management. We can get there by clicking Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management | Disk Management - or by just pressing Start and typing "diskmgmt.msc" and pressing Enter. Disk Management will tell you - and let you discover and change - more than you will ever learn with Windows Explorer and Computer. Use it to manage all kinds of devices that may be assigned "drive" letters, from partitions on your hard disks to optical drives, USB flash disks, cameras and card readers - and more. Drive letters are transient and can shift every time you add or remove something like a flash disk. You can use Disk Management to (semi-)permanently assign letters. And you can assign a name (label) to each device so that you know what it is, even if it used to be Drive F: and is now Drive G: or Drive X:. Explore Disk Management and its Help file. It explains a lot about disk drives that many of us have wondered for years. ;) RC -- R. C.
