Default External Hard Drive not showing up properly

Ok About a week ago windows installed an update the messed up my
computer. I couldnt get into windows so I ran a live linux cd to back
up my files with an external hard drive. I formatted the hard drive as
NTFS which should work with vista.

Today i plugged my external hard drive into the USB port and vista does
its driver installs for the drive. Then i go to my computer and find
nothing. So i go into the disk management program and the hard drive is
being read as Unallocated in Black.

I dont know what to do and im really starting to get annoyed because
these are my files with my pictures and music and i cant replace alot of
these.

Boot with your live Linux distro and see if you can read the hard drive. It
may be that the files are actually stored in a Linux formatted drive and not
NTFS.
If you can transfer them to CD/DVD they should be readable in Vista.

As well, you might boot to the Linux CD and try copying over the data to
your local hard drive, booting into Windows, verifying the successful copy,
formatting the external drive, and moving everything back over to the
external drive from within Windows.

There are other methods you could use to potentially get access to the
external drive from within Windows (without having to go through the above),
but these methods are not forgiving if you make a mistake.
