Default Vista problems on startup

hi to all,

i'm at my wits end, really hope some sage person can help me out
here...

i have an HP Pavilion dv6910us entertainment notebook pc, running on
vista home premium, bought within the past 12 months. i have had nothing
but problems with this computer. the fan gets REALLY LOUD, a grating
whirring sound like like i'm about to take my propeller plane for a
spin...

the real issue i've had since april (which leads me to wonder about
that conficker worm) is i get a TON of trouble on starup. all varied
kinds of error messages, such as "the windows vista home premium product
key you typed is invalid for installation." i also get a GREY screen,
sometimes i get (various program x) has stopped working", among them
windows explorer. it takes me about 5-10 times to GET to the desktop AND
the desktop not shut down on my after a few minutes (the computer shuts
off abruptly, then restarts and goes through startup on its own).

i know about safe mode and system restore in terms of troubleshooting,
but the after the first issue i checked system restore and all my
restore points were gone; plus i can't get all the way through to the
safe mode utility because the computer shuts off as i said before. in
fact i remember that the first time i had any of this trouble, firefox
crashed on me weirdly (meaning i got what at the time was the first i
saw of the mozilla crash reporter (ie a grey box with "we're sorry
firefox has crashed" or something like that)), and since then firefox
has continually crashed on me unless i first go to firefox safe mode and
turn off add-ons, so maybe this is somehow firefox-related as well

every time the computer restarts on its own in the startup i'm sent to
a "windows error recovery" screen, or sometimes i get a blue screen with
the first words "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut
down to prevent damage to your computer" and ending with "technical
information: *** stop: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x8EE4FF67, 0x8B8C4110,
0x00000000)" if that helps at all...

i know the info is pretty haphazard and disjointed, but i'm trying to
include as much of what i've seen to see if ANYONE can help me resolve
this issue. i'm running spyware doctor btw

any assistance would be greatly appreciated

That stop error can often be the result of failing ram
Try www.memtest.org download & create the bootable floppy / cd, boot from
that and run memory tests for several hours, or to a point when it reports
an error

If you can not even get to the screen where you choose Safe Mode (that is
how I read your post) you have hardware problems.

The noise you describe should clue you in to the area it is coming from -
likely your CPU cooler. If the fan blade does not spin freely, replace the
fan.
