Default Explorer at 99% CPU constantly

Hey guys,

This has been going on for quite a while but its getting to severe
points. What's happening is basically explorer.exe jumps straight to
95-99% when vista boots and remains like that without budging, resulting
in extreme slow computer performance. Attempting to close the explorer
then restarting will temporary bring it back to aroung 50% but it will
soon jump up again, restarting doesnt work.

Here's the stuff Ive tried to do:

1- Got rid of the index.dat files in the TIF, apparently they slow
performance.
2- Turned off search indexing
3- Tried to defragment the memory, but it doesnt do anything!

The weird thing is that it jumps to 99 without having anything running
which implies that there is a background process thats eating up the
CPU!

Do any of you guys have any idea how to go about this?

Well, something is running. You just don't know what it is. ;-)

1. Make sure the computer is completely virus/malware-free.

Do not skip this part.

2. If your computer was infected and your cleanup worked, you're done. If
not, then do clean-boot troubleshooting.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista -

3. And as always, you should answer The First Question Of Troubleshooting:
If the problem is new, what changed between the time things worked and the
time they didn't?

Download Process Monitor. It will show, in real time, all process
activities taking place. The lines scroll by very rapidly, but if
there's a single process of file hogging the system, it will be
very evident. If it's in explorer.exe, you will be able to see the
path of the offending object/activity. You can capture, then scroll
through the data, because it's very detailed.

Default Explorer at 99% CPU constantly

Hey Ian and Malke, both your inputs were rather insightful!

Malke, i was about to do a clean boot when I thought id try the Process
Monitor that Ian was on about. It took me a couple of minutes to work my
way around, but eventually there was one path that was causing
Explorer.exe to go mental, and it was leading to weird .mpg file that
was in the documents folder, around 20K which doesnt work but was
opening on run-time then slowly consuming the memory. Thus I quaranteed
the file, then removed it. The CPU is still working around 60% but the
monitor is showing me that there are several dead registries in the
svchost.exe that are working the CPU, which isnt that big of a deal!

Thanks for your help, I hope this post will be helpful to anyone else
facing this problem!

Thanks for your feedback. Process Monitor is a very powerful
tool for problems like this. Task Manager is almost useless in
cases like your's. There's also Process Explorer, but I find it's
just a more detailed form of TM. Monitor is the best because
it shows you in real time what's going on, and as you found
out, can lead you to the offending file. Every single transaction
that involves a process thread, the registry, or file system is
shown. It's also useful in the case where your HD LED is flashing
continuously, and you want to know what your drive is up to.

Default Explorer at 99% CPU constantly

I've had the same type problem for a number of weeks. I tried installing XP
SP3 thinking it would fix the problem but it didn't. After extensive surfing
and searching, I found a post that referred to the Process Monitor program.
Using the program, I was able to see all the "thread" processes that were
running under my explorer.exe process (I don't understand how they all work
together). The thread that was running the wsil32.dll process was using up
all my CPU time. I found out wsil32.dll is "Winlogon Startup Initialization
Library." I killed the process to see what would happen and my system
"calmed-down" back to "normal" (the System Idle process was now using up most
of the CPU time which I am sure is much better). I now need to investigate
this WSIL program, find out how necessary it is, find out if there is
something wrong with my system that caused it to hang up, and find out if I
can fix it or eliminate it.

Again, as someone else mentioned, I write all this hoping someone else might
discover a solution to their problem quicker. I've noticed through my
searching for the past couple weeks that many people (for many years) have
some process eating up their CPU time. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to
be a truly common cause at the root of the problem. I'd still like to see
some Master PC Guru put all the pieces together so I could understand the
cause in case something similar happens in the future. I'm betting most of
those people have given up and switched to Mac's.

Thanks!
