Default Optiarrc dvd burner not working ?

My Optiarc AD-7530B dvd burner isn't working, it plays music no problem, but I cannot burn any files onto discs. Now, I thought it was my discs, them being cheapish supermarket brand discs, so I have replaced them with Verbatim DVD+R, the lightscribe variety, due to the fact that it said extra sensitivity. So, I come to burn a disc, using windows media player. The burn facility in the media player said the disc was completed, yet checking that disc via computer, the disc just made loads of clucking noises, I suspect stopping and starting as if hunting. Whilst this is happening, I can do nothing with the DVD tab, like check properties etc, the thing appears to have frozen, as I get the hour glass symbol and a disc symbol after which I get the report there is no disc in the drive, and it is the format window that comes up. Now, I requested 'play', not format, and physically there is a disc in the drive, but the pc is not recognising it, after it has been doing something with it. Has anyone any ideas what could possibly be wrong and how to cure this?

Now, I have just downloaded and unstalled SP1, I was brave, as the last time I did that, it completely stuffed up my pc, so I removed it, vowing never to go back. But the issues I had last time I didn't get this time, but the system is awful slow, both in startup and net running, and I am using Opera 9

System details : Intel Core Duo T2300 1.66 ghz, 2GB ram, 34 gb free of 66gb hdd windows experience base score of 3.1. Optiarc driver 6.0.6001.18000.windows basic 32 bit on HP 530 notebook. I was trying to burn 860mb onto a 4.7gb Verbatim lightscribe DVD+R
