Default CD/DVD Code 37

My CD/DVD drive has disappeared and I'm getting a Code 37. The only
advise Google could give me was to uninstall, reboot, and update
hardware which did nothing. I'm completely computer illiterate though,
so I could be missing something obvious. Any advice?

There's no mention of Code 37 here, but have a look at:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

"Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or
other programs"

The fix deletes a couple of spurious registry keys.
