Default Shared Files on Vista/XP network

Apologies if already discussed.

Network fully operational - Public Folder on Vista can be shared on XP - no
problem BUT when I attempt to share another folder on Vista it requests
username. Options include username on Vista, Guest, Everyone or Add name. It
appears that Vista cannot see usernames on XP. Do I have to add these
usernames to the Vista computer? I think the 'everyone' option applies only
to 'Domains' which are not recognised on XP. Any solution gratefully received.

You need to have matching user accounts/passwords on both machines (see
below). The "Everyone" option applies to all users on the local
computer(s), not to domains as you thought.

Create matching user accounts and passwords on all machines. You do not need
to be logged into the same account on all machines and the passwords
assigned to each user account can be different; the accounts/passwords just
need to exist and match on all machines. DO NOT NEGLECT TO CREATE
PASSWORDS, EVEN IF ONLY SIMPLE ONES. If you wish a machine to boot directly
to the Desktop (into one particular user's account) for convenience, you
can do this:

XP - Configure Windows to Automatically Login (MVP Ramesh) -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm

Vista - Start OrbSearch boxtype: netplwiz [enter]
Click on Continue (or supply an administrator's password) when prompted by
UAC

Uncheck the option "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer". Select a user account to automatically log on by clicking on the
desired account to highlight it and then hit OK. Enter the correct password
for that user account (if there is one) when prompted. Leave it blank if
there is no password (null).

If one or more of the computers is XP Pro or Media Center, turn off Simple
File Sharing (Folder OptionsView tab).

The same user name and password has to exist on both computers. The
"Everyone" local group is just that, local to that computer. It includes all
users on that computer.

I'm still muddled. Where do I find the old printer name? Is the desktop pc
turned "on" to the Internet? I kind of thought that the temporary network
(since computers within 30') somehow just functioned within the wireless
gizmo..Sorry but guess I need more basic steps. I'd be happy to do some
research but don't know how to go any further than I have so far.
