Since June 2008, I have had a Windows 2000 system connected to a Vista
system thru a router. I have several shares defined on the Windows 2000 system. No shares are defined on the Vista system. On 28 April 2009, I replaced NIS 2008 with KIS 2008 on the Vista system. On 23 June 2009, I noticed that the Vista system could no longer COPY files from the Windows 2000 system to the Vista system, tho Vista could still open the files. I know that, on 19/20 June 2009, the Vista system copied files from the Windows 2000 system. So something broke after that. As I recall, there was a Windows update installed on 23 June 2009. Perhaps, that update changed some settings? What do I need to look for? Is this a known problem? |

How are you trying to copy files from Windows 2000 to Vista -- drag and drop, copy and paste, xcopy, something else? 2. What exactly happens when you do it? If there's an error message, what does it say? -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Program http://mvp.support.microsoft.com |

I've tried both "copy and paste", and "drag and drop". 2. What exactly happens when you do it? If there's an error message, what does it say? There is no error message. |

It's working again!
1. As the Windows update had been run 24 June, I restored a backup from 23 June. Alas, problem continued. 2. I then restored a backup from 21 June. Alas, problem continued. 3. I know that I did a COPY/PASTE as recently as 19/20 June, so I then restored a backup from 16 June. Problem fixed!!!!! I then updated KIS, problem still fixed!!!!!! I then ran Windows update, problem still fixed!!!!!!! Evidence is that something broke between the 16 and 21 June bckups, most likely on 20/21 June AFTER I did a COPY/PASTE on 19/20 June. I am now backing up the system. I guess that there could have been a virus that KIS did not detect. Any other suggestions for cause of the problem? When the backup is finished, I'll turn on Automatic updates in KIS. |

Looks like your troubles aren't completely over, though. What REALLY happened?
I noticed a similar problem, about the same time. I had just installed a Lexmark printer, and was blaming it on them. (Tech Support, bless their evil little hearts, put up with a lot of abuse, most of it un-earned.) With an XP machine and a Vista machine networked, I was suddenly unable to see one machine on the other. Vista's "Network" and "Network and Sharing Center" can't discover the XP machine, although the default network printer (on the XP machine) works fine while printing files from the Vista machine. I tried all sorts of combinations of firewall/none, password/none, private vs. public net, and made no progress. I then fired up a third machine (so: one Vista, two XP machines). Suddeny, I have no problem accessing files on either of the first two machines, but the third (XP) machine can't be accessed. All of them show on XP's Windows Explorer as well as the Vista's "Network" and "Full Map" off the "Network and Sharing" displays, but the third machine (2nd XP) can't be accessed. Message is still "///is not accessible. You might not have permission..." Is there something that changed in the latest update that has a counter one too low, or a pointer one position off? |

One theory is that the NTFS/Share permissions got messed up. Hmmm, here's a thought. My desktop is a multiboot system. Several daze ago, I noticed that one of the OS could not see the Vista system, tho the Vista system could see the desktop OS. The problem was that that desktop OS was impure, i.e., it was an install of Win 2000 OVER Win 98, and the workgroup name did not get updated. So, I wonder if booting to that OS, and then using Vista to access those files might have caused a screw up in NTFS/Share permissions. Guess I'll have to test. |

Darn, that could not have been the problem, because the COPY/PASTE issue also happened for local files on the Vista system. I'll just have to make sure that I do a backup every day, at least once. Until recently, I was not too actively using the Vista system, and I still keep all my files on the desktop, so going to a 10 day old backup really only required an update to the AV software. In effect, I got the Vista system so I'd be able to test programming with Office 2007, in particular Excel 2007. All source files are kept on the desktop, except for brief periods when I need to debug in Office 2007 using VB 6, or test in Excel 2007 directly. |
