Default Unable to detect DVD device

Hi,

I recently purchased a Dell with Vista 64 bit. I have been watching
DVD's the past few days on it without any problems. I was able to watch
one this morning but when a put another one in I received the following
message: *Unable to detect DVD or DVD device on this computer*. This
computer has yet to be hooked up online, so nothing new has been added
or updated on it. I rebooted, as well as un/reinstalled the driver in
Device Manager, but neither has helped.

Thank you for any assistance that you may provide!

Maybe this can help:
'Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows
or other programs' (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060)

Thank you for your reply. I did try removing the upper & lower filters,
as suggested by Microsoft, but I still get the same message. I am now
suspecting a hardware issue, as I am now hearing a clicking sound as the
DVD drive tries to start-up. Considering that I've only had this
computer for about a month, I'd hate to think that the DVD/CD drive has
completely stopped working and will need to be replaced....but that
appears the case.

Yes it sounds like you have an early life drive failure or that the second
DVD you tried was damaged and did not sit in the tray correctly and
therefore damaged the drive heads.

Darryl, On one of my desktops, the CD drive also died after 4 weeks. HP
sent me a new one and it was easy to change it. If you have a desktop, I
would ask the manufacturer to send you a new drive. If it is a laptop,
you have to return the whole unit.
