Defragmentation not working
I have a rather peculiar problem. The system I'm trying to defrag is currently 51% fragged, and, as you can imagine, that's just much too high. I've tried defragging using both Vista's built in defragger and the software Defraggler, but each time, the fragmentation level goes UP by a percent or two when it's finished. I've never encountered defrag issues on this level before. Any ideas? The system is running Vista Ultimate 32-bit, with quite a bit of hardware power behind it. If you need specs, ask (I'm not actually at that computer right now, else I'd post them now). -- stwstl5926 |

Analyzing the hard drive with PD will show you exactly which files are fragmented and the layout will often reveal what is preventing the defrag from completing properly. One thing you didn't mention is how much free space is available. A lack of free space is the main reason drives can't be fully defragged in my experience. In any case I would start by freeing up as much space as possible by running disk cleanup, removing all restore points and shadow copies, and deleting the hibernation file. You could also install and run Ccleaner, which will delete additional unnecessary files. |
