If you have an external monitor of any type plug it into the laptop and turn
it on then turn on the laptop. If any information is put on the external
monitor during the boot process but not the laptop's screen then the
backlight or other issues with the screen is evident and this could not be
corrected with a simple telephone call. If nothing appears on the external
monitor then you have other issues and return to the manufacturer or another
reputable (and big box stores like geek squad are not reputable) repair
service may be required.

Or it is possible that you have used your function key that controls the use
of an external monitor to use external monitor only, on my HP laptop it is
the F4 key.

I haven't but that is neither here nor there as I am not the OP. The thing
you are talking about is true but my method of checking will tell the OP
whether the screen is bad or not as the bios on almost every laptop I have
ever had will show on any monitor connected to the VGA port, as well as the
built in monitor screen on a laptop. Most computers the FN + function key
switch for the VGA port won't work until the computer has fully booted and
the BIOS information will show on the monitor prior to Windows starting.
Again, I am saying that this is on most computers but there may be
exceptions.
