Default Death Screen! *Dun Dun DUUN*

A few months ago I suffered frequent "Blue Screen of Death"
moments, after a while of cleaning things off my toshiba laptop and doing
a few virus scans and such the blue-screens stopped. Yesterday night I
started listening to music on my laptop using it's own music player.
Twice the screen went blank momentarily,I dismissed this for a temporary
issue and thought nothing of it as it carried on fine the rest of the
night.
Today I started up my laptop and BANG,Blank black screen after I put in
my Administrator password.
Then I took out the battery, restarted as normal and then later on while
I was listening to music another blank screen came up though I could
still hear my music going on in the backround. Then I had to restart it
as normal a few more times and noticed that the screen was so dark when
I switched it on,that I could barely see anything on the screen though I
could tell it was still running. It was almost as if someone had messed
around with the brightness. This type of black screen was different to
the normal blankscreens because then my laptop screen was TOTALLY blank
no matter what angle I looked at it,it would then go into a
hibernation-type mode.

Sure sounds like hardware failure. You can try troubleshooting it yourself,
take it to a competent local tech, or contact Toshiba tech support. If you
take it to someone local, don't use a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of
place.

I agree with Malke that this sounds like hardware, however can you make
100% sure that drivers are up to date.

Blue screens and crashes of that type can be driver problems, especially
video drivers. Unlike your average "Program" things like drivers can
interact directly with the hardware, so any problems with them can upset
the system so badly it makes error messages relating to the hardware
hard to interpret.
