This may not be a vista problem but I think you guys might be able to help. At home I have a file server ( Its named Bigred)running windows xp pro. I am using simple file sharing on the network. Its not on a domain its on a workgroup. The only software I have running on it is tversity and utorrent. On my vista machine or any other computer, I cannot connect to \\bigred\ through explorer, but if I add in a share name \\bigred\photos it works just fine. What the hell is going on and how do I fix it? Windows xp was just installed today with all updates. -- goodBEan |

What firewall are you using on the XP server? same workgroup on all machines, no firewall on the xp server as for account name I don't think that comes into play with simple file sharing. I even tried to connect to it from another windows xp machine and a multimedia streaming device that is smb compatable. No luck with either. I wan't any body within the local network to access these shared folders without complications. -- goodBEan |

Hi
Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party Firewall instructions. General example, http://www.ezlan.net/faq#trusted Vista File and Printer Sharing- http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx Windows XP File Sharing - http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;304040 http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;304040 Printer Sharing XP - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...utt_july2.mspx Windows Native Firewall setting for Sharing XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875357 Windows XP patch for Sharing with Vista (Not need for XP-SP3) - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922120 Jack (MVP-Networking). The most likely problem is that the registry entry that allows browsing the computer has the wrong value. Run the registry editor on Bigred and open this key: HLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA Set the value of RestrictAnonymous to 0. Reboot and try accessing the Bigred again. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Program http://mvp.support.microsoft.com |

I don't need it now but I will print this out and hang on to it just incase. Here is the thing: I ended up solving the problem by reinstalling windows and setting everything up. It was no big deal. I have had this problem before for the last 2 months, so I spent all day yesterday reinstalling windows on big red to get rid of the problem. When this problem popped back up after installing updates I made this thread and start searching for a solution. I soon gave up and reinstalled windows the second time. It was only then did I saw your solution. I wish I started this thread a while back. Its all good. -- goodBEan |
