Hello everyone, I have a simple question. My XP desktop and my Vista laptop are on the same network. I share and print with my laptop wirelessly with no problem, but I was wondering; when my desktop is turned off, I can't print from my laptop. The printer goes offline. Is there any way that I can print on my laptop without having to turn on my desktop PC too? Thanks for your help! -- missoz |

Not certain but I think you have to install the printer software or at least
the printer drivers on each computer so your laptop knows how to talk to the printer with the desktop turned off. "missoz" wrote in message ... Hello everyone, I have a simple question. I don't think it will work unless all elements on the path to the printer are online. You may print to "Microsoft XPS document" (which is most likely one of your printer options) and then send it to the printer when it is on-line. Alternatively, you could use doPDF ( 'PDF Converter - Convert to PDF free with doPDF' (http://www.dopdf.com/) ) which will act like a printer and can be selected in the printer window. It will also store you print file for later printing (via Adobe or whatever .pdf reader you have). -- whs |

If your printer is shared through the desktop (i.e. connected directly to
the desktop by USB or a parallel cable), then the desktop must be on in order to print from the laptop. The alternative is an Ethernet capable printer that can be connected to your network directly. If your printer does not have a built in Ethernet port, you can buy a print server. Ethernet capable printers and print servers may support wired and/or wireless networking. -- "missoz" wrote in message ... Hello everyone, I have a simple question. Yes, but you still need to install those drivers on each computer if you are
going to leave the other computers turned off. The printer drivers are not installed in the wireless router. It sounds like your print problem is getting so complicated there may not be any solution. ![]() "missoz" wrote in message ... GTS;1101630 Wrote: "missoz" wrote in message ... No, if the printer is physically connected to the desktop PC. If that is
the case, you can purchase a print server, and connect the print server to your router, then connect the print server to the printer. Alternatively you can purchase a wireless printer, which will not be physically attached to either the router or the desktop PC. -- Cari (MS-MVP) Windows Technologies - Printing & Imaging http://www.coribright.com/windows "missoz" wrote in message ...
