Hi, I'm new here. I came to this place trying to solve a different problem. That one got solved, so I figure I might as well ask this one! I got my Vista laptop last August (Acer aspire 4720ZG), and it got this weird problem since then. Whenever the laptop feels the need to update (there is a icon telling you that there is a pending update in the start menu, right?), and I don't do so by 3am that day, it starts closing all my programs (gives me like 5 seconds to save each of them) and then updates and restarts on its own... And it's always at around 3:00~3:10am. (I should stop staying up that late!) This gets annoying when it comes to a program that does not have a prompt save function when closed. Word and FireFox are fine, but I do run other programs that just closes before I have the chance to save. Is there a way to turn off that auto-restart thing? I do shut down my laptop regularly (so that it can update/install), like when I go to bed... when I'm up at 3am it's usually about doing some last minute homework, so it's really annoying when it restarts while I'm trying to get things done. Any help/input would be appreciated. Thank you!-- tincan |

You have Windows Update set to the default, which is to update at 3 AM. You probably also have the Wake On LAN option set in the BIOS. Change both. You can change the Windows Update setting to either automatically update at a different time or have it "download updates and notify me when ready to install". Your choice. To disable Wake On LAN, go into the BIOS and change that setting.
