Having read all the helpful posts made by others here and on other forums, I tested memory, system temperature, etc. The solution for me was with hard drives. I have three IDE hard drives. By reconfiguring them I was able to complete an install without problems after several dozen freezes previously. Prior to the reconfiguration I had my boot drive (C:\) on IDE 2 as the master and my DVD drive on IDE 1 as the slave. Both also had other drives on the same cables. After the reconfiguration, I put my boot drive as the master on IDE1 and the DVD drive as the slave on IDE1. I disconnected my two other hard drives. This time the install worked perfectly from beginning to end. I don't know why or how, but it did. ...may just have been luck, of course. I've read a few posts on other sites that suggest it may have something to do with one of the Microsoft patches put out over Xmas. I don't know if that's true, but I went away for 2 and a half weeks over Xmas. My machine was stable before and when I returned it was crashing at random intervals. The only change had been installing several patches on my first day back. One other alternative to reinstalling Vista for those who have the option, may be to roll back those patches. Hope this helps someone. -- Chris Whelan ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Chris Whelan's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=39721 View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=668058 http://forums.techarena.in |

I was having a problem installing Vista on a ASUS board. I had 8 gig ram installed (got a great deal). The installing files screen kept repeating, and then restart. Took out 2 mem sticks. Worked just fine. Things like this, early in the installation, are usually memory. Looks like my great deal was not such a great deal after all. -- ojohnsen ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ojohnsen's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?u=53188 View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=668058 http://forums.techarena.in |

There must be an epidemic or something because I'm having a similar problem. I recently upgraded from an nForce 410 motherboard to ECS' GeForce 8200A Black Edition. The upgrade didn't force me to do anything more than reactivate Vista, but I knew that I would eventually have to do a clean reinstall. Unfortunately, that day came yesterday. It took 20 minutes to boot into Vista, with one-minute lock-ups along the way, so I decided to reinstall. That's where the troubles started. The installation took twice as long as it did for the nForce 410 mobo, and locked up during the "Expanding Files" phase several times. The few times that I was able to get it to install all the way, it chugged slowly through the "start up for the first time" phase, then the HD light came on solid, which indicated a lock-up. I have never been able to get past that phase. Now, I know it's not the MB because I do not have these problems in Linux, which I used to dual-boot with, and I also know it's not the HD or cables because I switched over to a second SATA drive and the cables that came with the mobo, and the problem persisted. The version I used to install Vista with was a first-gen 32-bit Home Premium System Builder. Are there cases of mobo's that will not install with the original versions of Vista and will only install under SP1, and if so, where can I find how to slipstream? -- Cubdukat |

Never mind. I found out what the problem was. Apparently at one time my BIOS got reset, and it enabled the floppy drive. I don't currently have a floppy, so it hung up because it was waiting for a response it wasn't going to get . Fortunately, I fixed the problem, and Vista is back up and running quite nicely--for once. So it turns out that the entire reinstall--even though it was going to have to happen eventually--was for nothing, in that it was the BIOS setting that was causing Vista to misbehave, not Vista itself. If I had caught that, I could have saved myself a lot of heartache, because I was really waiting until I got another WD Green Power drive so that I could make a RAID setup. Oh, well... -- Cubdukat |
