You have installed one or more autostarting background programs that degrade you performance. Here's my standard post on addressing that issue: First, note that you should be concerned with *all* programs that start automatically, not just with those that go into the system tray. Not all autostarting programs manifest themselves by an icon in the tray. On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its Options to see if it has the choice not to start (make sure you actually choose the option not to run it, not just a "don't show icon" option). Many can easily and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the programs you don't want to start automatically. However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose of running the minimum number of programs. Despite what many people tell you, you should be concerned, not with how *many* of these programs you run, but *which*. Some of them can hurt performance severely, but others have no effect on performance. Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you should do is determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and what the cost in performance is of its running all the time. You can try google searches and ask about specifics here. Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informed decision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of. 2. You are infected with malware. This is more and more of a problem these days. What anti-virus and anti-spyware programs do you run? Are they kept up to date? i was thinking of ghosting my hdd and formating but i guess restoring a ghost image of my pc will bring back the same issues Yes. and if i was to format and reinstall everything it will just be too much of a pain. Yes, that's a lot of work for most people. On the same subject Does anyone know if vista ultimate is worth the price? and will it help? The difference between Vista Ultimate and what you presently have is that Ultimate has extra features. Whether it's worth the price (or is of *any* value to you) depends on whether those extra features are features you want or need. Will it help your performance problems? Definitely not. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) since 2003 Please Reply to the Newsgroup |

On the same subject Does anyone know if vista ultimate is worth the price? and will it help? ********************** This is the first time I've posted here. So many of you have put in your valuable time to help out the cause... I thank you and am using this opportunity to return the favour... I'm actually pretty happy with myself, because I have Vista Business running like a top... With 2GB RAM and an Intel 3.0GHZ processor, I was freaking about having to spend over a grand to upgrade, and I didn't have the money.... and I bet I spent literally hundreds of hours farting with my machine. 1. _Clean_up_your_registry_with__Easy_Cleaner_2.0_by_ _Toni Arts (FREE) 2. _set_your_swap_file_to_ZERO_in_Computer_Manager___ (with 2GB, Vista will still force to swap file to RAM) 3. _Boot_into_Safe_Mode_With_Networking__and note ALL the device drivers that weren't running and set them to manual (if they were running and "automatic" in Safe Mode I left them alone) 4. _Reboot_again,_note_what_wasn't_working_, and start those drivers you know you need (except some sound drivers I knew I needed and set them to "automatic" 5. It took one more reboot to set a few more drivers . At that time I started a couple of drivers manually, and once they were started I again reset them to "automatic." It's not exactly perfect. My video is a bit of a pig to start programs but once they're running, they go like stink. IF YOU HAVE ROOM FOR MORE MEMORY ON YOUR MOTHERBOARD, MAX IT OUT! I MANAGED TO GET 2GB PC333 ON MINE, THAT'S ALL. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! -- technowhiz ------------------------------------------------------------------------ technowhiz's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/137415.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-v...ce/1249426.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

All other versions of Vista are better but Win7 is even better. Although I agree that Windows 7 is better than Vista (in general almost every new version of any software is better than its predecessor), it is not true that other versions of Vista are faster than either Vista Home Basic or Vista Home Premium. The differences between the Vista versions (like the differences between the different versions of other Windows) have to do with what features each version contains. Higher, more expensive, versions contain more features, but their speeds are essentially the same. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) since 2003 Please Reply to the Newsgroup |
