Default Vista restore

Just a quick question,

Ive been using vista backup to backup all my files and folders, it runs once
a month. ive been doing this for about a year now.

Today i have selected a restore using the last successful backup in vista
restore console.

However i have noticed on my desktop for argument sake, i have things such
as icons and documents popping up which was on my desktop months ago and
which i know probably was in a backup months ago and i have long since
deleted since the latest backup.

So why are they back since my latest backup did not include them (i
understand each backup made is just backing up changes since the last backup
but then surely should then delete items when they have been removed from
recent backups) and if its restoring everything up until the latest backup
which did not include these items will they be removed once the restore has
finished?
