Default "Class Not Registered" Error Message: Huh?

I run Vista Home Premium on my HP laptop. When I try to open the
recycle bin, or if I try to open items on the list that pops up when the
start button is clicked (Computer, music, network, games...) I get an
error message window with a large red X and it says "CLASS NOT
REGISTERED". What's going on, and how do I fix this?

It sounds like the registry is corrupted. If you have any restore
points try using the recommended one in System Restore(holding down the
Windows and Pause keys should bring up System Restore.)

It's a good idea if you can afford an external USB drive to have system
image backups. There are free programs like Macrium Reflect that may
work for you(I have HP Pavilion desktop PCs and Macrium works on those.)
Also there's a free program called ERUNT. Just google for it. Read
the readme file for how to set it up to store a revolving 7 day backup
of your Registry.

Did you run a registry cleaner?

If you didn't, don't... ever. Those things can be dangerous.

I didn't run a registry cleaner, but I did ask about this at my local
Best Buy Geek Squad. They think the registry somehow got corrupted.
Thanks to all who have replied so far. I will follow thru on some of
your suggestions.
