I just installed Windows Vista Ultimate Edition. I have two lan adapters in
my computer.

Lan 1: Auto Ip Address for internet running through DLink Router. Vista
Identifies and it works fine.
Lan 2: Static Ip Address for my home peer-to-peer network. Vista tags as
unidentified, it won't let me change the name, and if I change it to a
private network, it changes back to a public network after a reboot. If I
change the IP address to auto, Vista detects it as a Home Network, which is
fine, but then I can't see the computers on my home network.

Does anyone know how I can get Vista to properly identify my network with
the static ip address?

Actually my configuration is quite similar. Of course with the same problems.
"Unidentified Network" is a special type: NP_NETWORK_UNIDENTIFIED; you can't
change the name and it will revert to "Public network" after reboot ( ;o)

Aparently the problem is that Vista belives that your IP parameters are not
correct: especially it misses the gateway. But if one dares to put the IP of
your peer in as the gateway it warns that different gateways could confuse
the system, blah, blah, blah ... Actually it does confuse it - you wont have
access to the Internat anymore.
I tried to put a managed device in between (a low(est) cost router) and told
it the router address as gateway. It still mumbles about a second gateway but
it finaly accepted it - and that worked (pity the built in switch in the
router is a 100 Mb/s device so that's not what I'll keep either).

I have the impression for MS a LAN at home does not exist anymore.
