OK. I found out from Google search where that name comes from.

In September 1993, AOL offered gateway access to Usenet.


I heard it had something to do with students returing to college every
September, resulting in a new flood of garbage being posted to usenet.
Back when college / university students actually knew what usenet was
that is.
