I have a Vodafone broadband service at home which works fine for sending and
receiving Vista Mail BUT when I go on holiday with my laptop I can only
receive but not send emails. I'm afraid I can't remember the error message
and I won't be able to provide it until I go away again, which will be too
late. The SMTP address is to a Vodafone server. Vodafone has a web mail
service which can send messages but it is a complete pain to use and very
quickly generates a good income for the Internet Cafe.
I do have a Yahoo Mail account but I don't want to have to tell all my
friends to use that address when I'm on holiday. It caused some confusion
last year when some of them continued to use Yahoo when I got back home
I would be grateful for any suggestions.

I am concerned that you have not provided enough information. You have made
an excellent case for why you need help, but you have not provided enough
information to help you.

Please do not post complete email addresses (to protect yourself from spam
and other malware), but you will be more likely to get help if you provide
the relevant domain names and server names and other settings.

Chances are, your server setting for Vodafone uses port 25 for SMTP.
When you are away from home, you run into a port 25 block. What you
experienced is normal. As a general rule, the owner of the SMTP server
you are using must be the same as the entity providing your Internet
connection at that moment. For more on this issue see

The available workarounds when sending away from home are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask Vodafone if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP.
3. If you use the same away-from-home connection frequently,
substitute the SMTP server belonging to that connection. This is a bit
tricky, but if you want to go that route, I can provide more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, set it up in Windows Mail, and use that for
your sending chores. Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked
like port 25 is. You can also use your Yahoo account. Both Yahoo and
Gmail have provisions for changing the visible 'From' address to
the one you use more regularly. That way, your recipients won't know
that you are sending from a different account., and their replies will go
to the correct mailbox.

I've had a busy day, taking delivery of a new mobile phone and trying to get
all my old settings and data transferred to the new one. Then flushed with
that success, I beat the Yahoo help system into submission and discovered
that Yahoo can do exactly what I need - pick up POP3 messages and disguise
the fact that I'm not replying to them from Vodafone.
On the point made by Sam Hobbs about not quoting my full email address - the
one shown in the message is a very old UK Online address that died when I
switched from them several years ago. It somehow seems to have migrated
itself through from XP to VISTA mail and now to Live mail as you recommended
as a fix for the "Smileys problem".
I assume this reply will seem to have come from the same place, but just in
case it doesn't, I'll try not to bother you again.
