Why "unfortunately"? Vista is just about as good or bad at networking
as XP and Windows 7.

Sounds like something is misconfigured.

Not sure what you mean by "search". In a command window, you can type
"net view \\(whatever the IP address is)" and if everything is set up
properly, you will see the shares. You can connect to a share with the
NET USE command using either the IP address or machine name.

Might be a firewall problem.

Its not a firewall problem.

By search i mean - in xp you can search for computers. example
right click on my network places and chose search computers.

I cannot see a option for search for computers in vista, only search
files etc Any ideas how to search/connect as above i.e. not using a
command window?

I believe you get the same effect if you right click in the network
folder and hit Refresh, or just hit F5. Otherwise you can go into the
network configuration where it shows all the networks running on your
system and what machines are connected in a schematic.

I have Vista and XP on a Lan. The best way I found to get it to work
was to use a workgroup. I used the same workgroup name as I had set up
in XP. Activated file and printer sharing, no firewall, no passwords.
Then I just used the built-in shared folders.

Here's the weird part. Once I got it to work with the system shared
folders, I could share another folder, and that could be seen remotely.
Don't ask me why. So try doing it in 2 stages. Just shared folders
like Shared Documents first. After you have it working, try manually
sharing another folder on either machine.

I just double-click the Network icon, and all the computers on my
network are visible. There are two running XP, one running Windows 7,
and one running Ubuntu Linux.

You can also connect to a known computername\share by typing it's UNC
name in the address bar in a Windows Explorer window.

Do you have 'Network Discovery' enabled?
