Default Problem loading soiftware on Vitsa Ultimate

I have Vista Ultimate OS. When I attempt to load software - MS Office 2010
for example - i receive an error:

"Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 encountered an error during setup.
Error 1606. Could not access network location %APPDATA%\. Error 1606. Could
not access network location %APPDATA%\."

The MS Office Professional is a valid, licensed copy that I bought at
Microcenter. The license key is accepted without any error messages.

The same error displays when I attempt to load any software. Nothing loads.

Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this?

I can't account for it, and I can't think of a safe fix at the moment,
but normally the system variable %APPDATA% points to a local location
like:

C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming

Your error message implies that Windows is confused about where your
application data is stored. Is yours a corporate computer that's
usually connected to a company network?

To see where Windows expects your APPDATA directory to be, open a
command window (Start | Run | CMD) and at the prompt, type "SET" (no
quotes) Look for the line start with APPDATA.

I threw away all my Vista images long ago, but assuming that it's the same
structure as in Windows 7 you might:

* Ensure that the folder exists and that the environment symbol %APPDATA% is
correctly defined. %APPDATA% ought to resolve to
"%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming" where %USERPROFILE% is either
"C:\Users\userid" or "C:\Documents and Settings\userid".

* Check the permissions on your profile. Roaming and AppData should both
inherit permissions from their parent folder, which should give the profile
owner (i.e., you) full control of all files and folders.

No, it's my personal machine at home.

I sent an email to you.

Thanks. I'll check my machine.
If I were to go to Windows 7 Ultimate, would it be an upgrade or a full
version relacement?
