Default vista, vpc and ubuntu

I am so so tired of trying to get any version of Linux working under VPC
2007 running Vista.

This is more for you Linux lovers.

Why, why, why, when you've know now for numerous versions that VPC does not
do 24 bit color depth you continue to insist on that being the default
during detection hence making actually even checking it out nothing but a
frustrating garbled screen that seems unavoidable.

Why, why, why???

Must be at least the 7th time I've tried and just going to again give up in
frustration.

The 7th. time?
That takes a lot of patience, a lot more than I would have.
The only problem I had with ubuntu was my dial-up connection.
Ubuntu needs a high speed connection, which leaves me out.
Supposedly there was a work around, but that didn't work for me either.
Now I am just as happy, or happier, without it.

Well after numerous resets and start over, lots of online research etc. I
finally found a means to over-ride the graphics problem and actually get it
installed and booting off the virtual hard disk in a virtual environment
under Virtual PC 2007.

That gave me four vm's to play with, 98SE, XP Pro, Win 7 Enterprise and
Ubuntu 11.1. Both 98SE and XP Pro I gave 512 megs ram to, Win 7 & Ubuntu got
1024. All the windows OS's run fine, Ubuntu was intolerably slow, minutes
for dialog box to come up on empty desktop. Also didn't think much of the
new desktop. It lasted on system one day before I backed up the vhd and
associated files and deleted that image from the system.
