Default Vista update messed up my machine

I installed a "critical update" to my Windows Ultimate 64 bit (with SP2
already installed a few days ago) this morning and restarted my computer
at the end of the install process. However, after the initial Windows
bar in the middle bottom of the screen, all I end up is the cursor with
a blue circle next to it. Though I can move the cursor, the rest of the
screen is black. I have booting up in Safe Mode, the only difference in
the result is a larger cursor arrow and a larger blue circle. Any
suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
