I was unable to zip the driver files using 7-zip - thanks!
"Neil Harley" wrote: ChiTownDi wrote: Ramesh, how do you extract the reg file and run it from the desktop? I am unable to unzip or extract it. When I right click on the file, I see the merge option. I clicked on it and it said the registry was updated (after asking are you sure). I am still unable to open or extract the files from a zip file. Also, how can I tell where or which reg entry was updated? I noticed my computer takes longer to reboot. So, I am concered that I may have done a bad thing and would like to undo it (will system restore undo it?). Sorry, I should have asked first before I tried to do some thing when I wasn't sure. Thanks for any help you can provide. I am running vista home premium 32 bit and finally have some new tv tuner vista drivers that I need to install. Unfortunately, they come in zip files that I cannot open (unless I purchase other software). Try 7-Zip to see if that allows you to open the Zip files: http://www.7-zip.org/ |

That was helpful to learn... why on earth if I am running as Admin should I
need to "Run As" Cmd and then run the reg file... but I do, and it works! (whereas right-clicking on the reg file and choosing Merge doesn't) Thanks Julian "Chris" wrote: Thanks. That's what I was trying to do; however, I couldn't figure out how to run the .REG file and have the updates successfully apply. I kept getting errors indicating that I did not have administrator access. I had been opening a command prompt and running the .REG file with the RunAs command, trying to impersonate an administrator account. After doing a little more digging, I realized that I needed to open the command prompt as an administrator (by right-clicking the Command Prompt menu item and selecting "Run as administrator") and then run the .REG file. After successfully running the .REG file in this way, my ZIP file association problem was resolved. |

Interesting one, Julian. Did clicking the "Merge" option prompt you for elevation (UAC)?

Hi Ramesh,
no it didn't prompt - at least that would have been consistent. I was happy that the PNG issue with Help & Support was resolved, puzzled that it didn't update all keys, but I left it at that... it was only because I was looking for something else (Indexing Search within ZIPs that I stumbled across this and I thought I'd give it a go. *&^%! UAC - gets in the way when I don't want it, doesn't pop up when it should do! Julian "Ramesh, MS-MVP" wrote: Interesting one, Julian. Julian,
no it didn't prompt That really puzzles me! How about running regedit.exe directly or using this syntax: "regedit.exe PATH:\filename.reg" -- Regards, Ramesh Srinivasan, Microsoft MVP [Windows Shell/User] Windows® Troubleshooting http://www.winhelponline.com "Julian" wrote in message ... Yes, that caused a UAC prompt.
FYI - not sure if it's relevant but maybe you can try reproducing this to see if it has any effect... I was always ultra cautious about .reg files, so I changed the default association to Notepad (so accidental opening wouldn't merge and I could inspect/edit by double clicking - an old XP hangover possibly no longer required with Vista) - but of course this lost me the Merge option on the context menu... so when I did want Merge, I changed the association back... Merging i the PNG fix was the very first thing I did after re-associating ..reg with regedit "Ramesh, MS-MVP" wrote: Julian, no it didn't prompt That really puzzles me! I'm having the same issue.
Some sites indicated it had to do with Microsoft Defender... But, after disabling it, it's still slow. I also read something about Vista possibly running a restore point or something...not to sure on that one, but any help regarding the slow extraction of zip files would be great!!! "CanuckSoldier" wrote: I have a different issue with zip files. I do alot of game testing, which quite often means D/Ling very large zip files from the company ftp server. These are often files 300-400meg compressed and 500-600megs uncompressed. The problem I have is that windows seems to not only take 100% of the cpu during a copy/uncompress function but still takes horrendously long to unzip the files. For instance windows will take 4.5 hours for a file that WinRAR takes a mere 15-20mins to extract the same files on the same machine. Anyone else experience this or have ay ideas? CS "Waistcoat" wrote in message ... Could windows update not have some sort of add-on "file association check" that could allow the user to choose which files to reassociate with the windows defaults, in much the same way that when I install, for example, realplayer, it gives me a list of file associations I can make? Maybe a wizard is the order of the day. Thanks all for your help though. "Ramesh, MS-MVP" wrote: You're welcome Wayne. Windows Update fix common problems like this? Good idea. hey i dl mixtapes from a site and when i dl they are supposed to be
compressed files by default but i can no longer accept that as an option. then when i dl it i cant hit extract all so idk what to do. "Ramesh, MS-MVP" wrote: Running the REG file from the subject user account (that's experiencing the .zip file problem) should help, as the REG file resets a user key in addition to fixing the file associations. Example: Restore the .exe file association in Windows Vista, after incorrectly associating it with another application: http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/165/1/ -- Regards, Ramesh Srinivasan, Microsoft MVP [Windows Shell/User] Windows® Troubleshooting http://www.winhelponline.com "Chris" wrote in message ... Thanks for your post. For some bizarre reason on my PC, ZIP files have become associated with Microsoft Word. Reverting the association to its original program is proving to be quite an ordeal. I downloaded the the zipfix_vista.reg file from the URL in your post. A note on that page says: "Note that you need to be an administrator to apply these fixes." I'm purposely running as a non-administrator account on my PC. Sure enough, when I try to merge the .reg file, I get the following message: "Cannot import C:\Users\Chris\Downloads\zipfix_vista.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes." This is a strange error, since I'm not aware of any keys being open; certainly, I don't have RegEdit open. The file association is fine for the administrator account, so I don't believe that merging the ..REG file while logged on as the administrator will fix this problem. I've tried using the RunAs command to run RegEdit as the administrator account, but it comes back with: "RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - regedit. 740: The requested operation requires elevation." I'm not sure what this means nor how (or if) I can get around it. I suppose I could try temporarily changing my user account to be an administrator, but that seems quite extreme. Why is this so difficult to accomplish? I have a similar problem:
Using Vista Home Premium at workplace. Been recieving e-mail attachment every Thursday from "CBDisk-FedBizOpps". (Contract bid opportunities). They sent their own CD-Rom to install so as to download these zip files to. Was working fine until all of a sudden, when it comes to open the file to install the weekly issue I get this-"Dyna Zip Unzip error: Zip structure invalid (Problem reading Zip file)" What has happened? Is this a Windows problem? -- Lilly "Waistcoat" wrote: Hi all, I've suddenly lost my ability to unzip files.
