Default system icon checkboxes grayed out

After my most recent reboot, my volume, network and power icons didn't appear
next to the clock. I checked in the properties, and the checkboxes to show
these icons are grayed out. How can I fix this? I need those icons back!
Thanks.

bump for more help. My battery is also draining in about 10 minutes, even
though it's set to "balanced."

Shawn,

The same behavior happened to me and I can't tell what caused my Volume,
Network and Power System icons selections are greyed out. Please let me know
if you solve this.

Thanks,
Clyde

Clyde, turns out it was my Alps touchpad driver causing the issue. Both a
beta and Vista-released driver caused the problem. If you don't have an Alps
driver installed, I'd try taking off a driver you installed for a device on
your laptop.

Let me know what you find out.
